The Dance Liberation Circle
It's okay to be an "okay" dancer
Welcome to the Dance Liberation Circle.
No website. No social media. Part of my mission is to create more ways for us to put our phones down.
I’m Christina.
I created the Dance Liberation Circle because dance floors are either empty, or they’re stiff, or they feel weirdly serious.
It seems we’ve forgotten the evolutionary purpose of dancing:
To be silly.
Yep! Dance, in its most basic form, serves the same purpose as farts. You read that right - farts. Dancing is supposed to cut through the seriousness and insert some humor into our lives, to humanize us, and humble us. Remind us that we all have bodies that do absurd things, we all “put our pants on one leg at a time,” and we all look a little funny when we do it.
Of course there are other reasons why we dance. I’m referring to what I call “free dance” which is the dancing we do at parties, weddings, concerts - you know what I’m talking about! Where maybe a little rhythm and coordination might be helpful, but if you don’t have it, that’s okay too. No training required.
Think about it. At a wedding, nothing brings your intimidating new father-in-law down to earth quite like doing the funky chicken with him under sparkly lights.
I write extensively about this in my Thoughts On Dance section, if you’re curious!
So, what is the Dance Liberation Circle exactly?
It’s a space for us to come together and get over our fears. The ones you might be aware of and the ones lurking deep in your subconscious mind.
Rather than learning steps, we work on building the skill of “how to think”, and how to stay present with ourselves while we move.
And believe it or not, these skills not only help us to let go on the dance floor, but they make a difference in your everyday life too (testimonials below).
The Dance Liberation Circle is a monthly 2.5 hour gathering for those of us who:
enjoy deep discussions about vulnerable topics and personal growth,
feel a bit nervous or anxious about “free dancing” in front of other people, whether you have previous dance experience or not,
are tired of feeling held back by our own fears and desire to move through life in new ways
Our circle follows this outline:
90 minutes of collective discussion on a certain topic
30 minutes of guided movement exploration
30 minutes of free dance
*participation is always voluntary, and we have a very strict no phone policy
Here’s What People Are Saying
“I’m not blowing smoke when I say this group literally changed my life for the better. It has brought me so much joy, so much healing, such a sense of intimacy with the other people in the group, and intimacy with myself. I am closer to being the woman I want to be because of this class.”
“This group makes being vulnerable and real feel safe, better than any other group I’ve been a part of. I really think if everyone got to go to something like this, the world would be a better place.”
“It’s a very real experience with some awkwardness but also with support to be whoever you are in the moment, which leaves you with less fear and a sense of encouragement.”
“The DLC gives me space to grieve and love and move and breathe through the pain I didn’t know I was carrying.”
So, do you want in?
We meet one Saturday per month.
Check it out and sign up here.
If you don’t live in the area, I’m sorry. I don’t host online.
But I’ve got lots of thoughts about dance! Feel free to click around here.
May you be moved by something today <3
